Eros n°4 (Winter 1962)

Eros was an American quarterly magazine which only ran four issues in 1962. It was dedicated to the subjects of eroticism and love but showcased contemporary art, fashion, music, theater and literature. The magazine was a hard-cover and its artistic direction was run by Herb Lubalin, one of the most important graphic designers of the 20th century. EROS was very controversial as it showcased taboo subjects in American society and had a satirical take on contemporary political issues. 

This is the fourth and last issue of Eros Magazine which caused massive public outrage and might have been the reason the editors stopped the publication. The cover depicts Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and the typography for most of the issue uses Old English style. This issue was not well received because of its essay entitled “Black and White, in Color”, capturing intimate moments of interracial couples. This was in the context where segregation still ruled American society.
